This Limpopo-based farmer undertook to reduce energy costs to the farming operation. A comprehensive analysis was performed and various simulations were done prior to deciding on a course of action. The cost saving was achieved by eliminating unnecessary transformer capacity on the farm and consolidating the energy load. An internal electricity reticulation system was designed and installed. A fit for purpose solar PV plant was added to the energy mix. Together with an existing generator, the design allows for future expansion at the appropriate time.
Energy management by the farmer has formed part of the overall program success to reduce costs as the farming operations now allow for energy management schedules to be implemented. Moving to a Time of Use (TOU) based tariff structure will further reduce costs.
