Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) are sometimes also referred to as Variable Speed Drives (VSDs). VFDs are typically installed to operate with larger electrical motors and enable the electrical motors to continuously operate on their optimal curve. This is a useful feature where motors typically operate at fluctuating load levels. VFDs are successfully installed to reduce energy costs.
